# India DPDPA Compliance Course for Hardware

India DPDP Act compliance for connected devices: personal data scope, consent, children's data, security, retention and Data Fiduciary duties.

Somewhere in a hardware company's companion app right now, a screen is asking an Indian customer for permission to collect their data — and almost nobody on the team can say with confidence whether that screen would survive a challenge under India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act. The Act received Presidential assent in August 2023. Its final Rules were notified only in November 2025, and a phased, eighteen-month rollout is still actively unfolding as this course is being recorded — which means the law is already fully binding, even while the institutions built to enforce it are still coming online. This course teaches the DPDPA, known to most simply as India's data protection law, from first principles to complete practical compliance, built specifically for connected hardware companies — manufacturers, importers, and sellers of devices that collect personal data through sensors, companion apps, and cloud services. It starts with the legal architecture itself: the Act and Rules, the institutions that administer and enforce them, who counts as a Data Fiduciary and a Data Principal, and what counts as personal data under a law with a deliberately broad definition and no separate 'sensitive data' category. From there it builds the core mechanics every hardware company needs: Section 6 consent standards and Section 7's nine legitimate uses without consent, Section 8's general obligations including the seventy-two-hour breach notification clock, and the strict children's data framework — a child defined as anyone under eighteen, with behavioral monitoring and targeted advertising prohibited outright regardless of consent. The course then covers Significant Data Fiduciary obligations, the emerging Consent Manager framework and cross-border transfer rules, and — critically — the single most important thing most teams get wrong: the current live status of enforcement itself. The Data Protection Board of India is still not fully operational as this course is recorded, the Consent Manager framework goes live in November 2026, and full enforcement readiness is targeted around May 2027 — but every obligation covered in this course is already legally binding today, and 'wait and see' is a losing strategy. Practical modules on data classification and mapping, notice and consent architecture, security safeguards, and retention and erasure round out the compliance core. Every module ends with a knowledge check, and the closing modules deliver a complete, realistic end-to-end walkthrough of SuryaGrid Devices, a composite hardware company running a video doorbell, a fitness band, and a smart plug through a full compliance program from scratch — the common mistakes and edge cases that trip up even careful teams, and your own thirty, sixty, ninety-day compliance action plan. Built on DPDPA's full statutory text, the final DPDP Rules 2025, and current 2026 guidance on the Act's phased rollout, the Data Protection Board's institutional status, and the Consent Manager framework's operational timeline. This course contains the use of artificial intelligence for asthetic purposes.
